Sport Climbing at the Olympics? The IOC said “yes” for Tokyo 2020

Yesterday the declaration of the International Olympic Committee: at the next Olympic Games in 2020 even climbing shoes will trod the olympics podiums together with surf, skate, baseball/softball and karate

After the decision to grant full recognition to ISMF, the International Olympic Committee met again yesterday in Rio de Janeiro for the 129th time, and just one day from the opening of the Games, the IOC has approved the entry of five new sports that will complete Tokyo 2020 program.

The Olympic Agenda underlines the importance of meeting the requests of the younger generation, trying to engage this audience which is attentive to sport but in constant evolution. "We want to create sports for young people." Reiterated the IOC President, Thomas Bach "We can no longer expect them to automatically come to us, we must go to them."

Thus Tokyo has seen its proposals approved and now prepares to welcome surf, sport climbing, skate, baseball (softball for women) and karate, all unanimously approved by the Olympic Committee. The idea of giving the Organising Committees the possibility of proposing new sports for their edition of the Games was created in order focus on the development of the Olympic program in terms of innovation, flexibility and youth. Tokyo 2020 was the first Organizing Committee able to take advantage of this opportunity, proposing the five new sports to the IOC as early as September 2015.

"Tokyo’s well balanced proposal meets all the Olympic Agenda objectives." - Continues Bach - "The five sports are an innovative combination of both established and emerging events that are popular in Japan and which in time, will add to the legacy of the Games."

The message that comes from Tokyo is an important one. Something that goes beyond the symbolic Olympic recognition and that from the Tropic of Capricorn to the Land of the Rising Sun is proof of a growing movement in which La Sportiva has always believed. From the first ascents in the Yosemite Valley and the first sports competitions to the present day, the Trentino brand has grown along with climbers, generation after generation, sharing their passion for climbing through the development of cutting-edge products and solutions.

Today we look to the future of climbing with different eyes, today producers, athletes and climbing enthusiasts can celebrate this huge milestone united under the five circle banner, because for the first time in Tokyo ...there will be a place on the Olympic podium for climbing shoes too.
