La Sportiva: an award for generational changeovers

The company from Trentino receives the “From Father to Son” award, in Milan, a prize dedicated to Italian companies that have been able to successfully manage the generational shift.  Giulia Delladio receives the award on behalf of the company.  

On the 29th of November, the “From Father to Son” award ceremony took place at the Swiss Centre in Milan which, now in its ninth edition, saw alternating on stage, a large and variegated number of entrepreneurs from the Italian “family owned” companies “ that have successfully managed the generational shift in recent years. Of the forty-seven finalists, the jury, chiared by Dr. Paolo Veronesi, divided the winners into eight distinct categories and chose the overall winner Antonio Carraro S.p.A. that received the title from Donnafugata, the winner of the previous edition.

La Sportiva, world leader in the production of outdoor footwear and clothing, won the prize for  internationalization dedicated to the generational shift in companies with a strong presence in foreign markets, capable of distinguishing themselves on the global scene without losing the spirit and ownership unique to family management. 

Among the success factors common to many of the winners recognized by the jury are:  

  • The introduction of important innovations and profound changes brought about by the new generation management;  
  • The organizational structure open to members outside the family 
  • the enhancement of family values and the entrepreneurial history of the company 

Another fundamental characteristic of La Sportiva is the presence of female figures thanks to the entry on the board of directors of Giulia Delladio, strategic marketing manager and daughter of the CEO Lorenzo Delladio.
In Italian SMEs the generational takeover by a female member of the family, has doubled in the last 3 years and is characterised by a greater attention to environmental and social sustainability, as is the case of the company from the Val di Fiemme.

During the ceremony Dr. Silvia Rimoldi, head of KPMG’s Centre for Excellence in Family Businesses gave an interesting speech with which she underlined that  “Although experts, anaylsts and market observers often seem to forget about them, family businesses are a fundamental part of the European economy. In some European countries in fact, they make up the majority of companies and together they constitute a large and varied group at European level, ranging from small businesses with just two people, to massive, globally active businesses that have thousands of employees.”
