Bio

Hansjörg Auer, '84, is an Austrian climber and mountaineer. He became famous for a number of free solo ascents, climbing alone without any safety measures, where the lack of any kind of protection means that any error, no matter how slight, could prove fatal. In 2007 he caused quite a stir with his free solo ascent of the famous route “The Fish” on the south face of the Marmolada, 900-m, with difficulty up to level 7b +.
His most important climbs include: Silberschrei - Sasso Santa Croce (ITA), Vogelfrei - Schüsselkarspitze (AUT), Waiting for Godot - Torres del Paine (CHI), Pan Aroma - western peak of Lavaredo (ITA), Schiefer Riss - Sagwand (AUT) and the first ascent of the Khunyang Chhish East, in the Karakorum in 2013. This project earned him and his fellow climbers the nomination for the Piolet d'Or award.
