Serre Chevalier (France), 21-22 July
11° International Climbing Master

The Masters are the most loved competitions, both by spectators and by athletes. This because the qualitative level of the event is without doubt higher than the one of any other competition. In the international field practically two reference events have remained: Arco Rock Master and Serre Chevalier. The first one reaches this year the goal of fourteen editions, while the French meeting has been organizes for eleventh years.
Organization, logistic, show, choreography are the elements that give the added value to the Master. The attending athletes have been all invited considering the international ranking, and occasionally some wild cards are present. Two competition days. The semifinal on Saturday is dedicated to the on-sight competition; the second manche is reserved to the sixteen best athletes, eight men and eight women. The finalists have thus half an hour time to try the moves of a "worked" route, respectively 8b+ and 8a, that, a few hours later, they will try to redpoint. The first competition day shows a good balance of the powers in the field, with as many as six competitors completing the half final route, both in the women's and in the men's field. Among them in great evidence the Italian Christian Brenna, arrived to the French appointment in top shape and motivated to repeat the affirmation of the past year. The routes are may be a little too easy. This is at least the rumor among the spectators. Instead this has been made on purpose, to have the possibility to make a superfinal, epilogue surely welcome by spectators and organization. Great expectation and numerous paying spectators, for the first time in history for budget reasons, for the Saturday final. Another time the five thousand people haven't been deluded by the evolutions of the athletes. Five completed routes, two on the men's final and three on the women's final. Therefore assured superfinal. Hirayama and Ovtchinnikov sign the performance on the men's route. Only a few holds behind Christian Brenna, who isn't able to repeat the last year performance and must be satisfied with the third place, anyway still his best result of the year to date, waiting for the better times planned for the season final. Therefore superfinals. Girls on the men's worked route, of course made easier, while the guys compare themselves on the women's route, also this modified for the occasion.
Yuji Hirayama shows a great performance climbing three quarter of the route and surpasses with a few holds the Russian Evgeni Ovtchinnikov. Among the girls great performance of the regenerated Liv Sansoz, returned in great shape after a weak first part of the season because of an injury. Same hold for the rival of ever, Belgian Muriel Sarkany, who unfortunately must be satisfied with the second place, as she didn't completed the half-final route. Third place for the beautiful Stephanie Bodet. Impressive fireworks and a Rock Concert close the French event that very likely will take place also next year.
