Chamonix (Francia), 16 July
Third Bouldering World Cup 2000

As we already said, Chamonix organized also a Bouldering World Cup but the weather ruined this competition too, that should have taken place in two days. The first day had to be canceled, and all the program had to be concentrated on Sunday, hoping in a weather improvement. Start at 9 AM with 120 competitors coming from all over the world. Four boulder moves to climb during the qualification. Five minutes climbing and five minutes resting. Then climb again. For the ranking it counts the number of completed boulders, the needed tries, the number of reached "zones". Evaluating the "zone" gives additional points to the ones who didn't reach the top but all the same reached a high hold of the boulder. For the Italian colors to remark the good performance of Giulia Gianmarco, who reaches the final with the highest score in the qualification. In the men's field the best result for for the Italian men is the one of Riccardo Scarian, 23°. Behind Luca Giudici 34° and even worse the '99 reigning champion Christian Core, 39°. Among not few difficulties the event continues until the end. And clearly the sun comes out a little, and we can admire the exceptional landscape, with the Mont Blanc granit sprinkled white by the snow and swept by a cold wind the renders even stronger the enviromental contrast. Great victory of the Russian school, that dominates the field. In the men's field three of the first four athletes come from the Eastern countries. No history for the women's contest, where Choumilova demonstrates to be without concurrents this year, in absence of Bodet, motivated by other objectives (hard routes in the crags). Unlucky performance of Gianmarco, who perhaps pays for the emotions of her first international final. At last she finishes with a good eleventh place, important condition to perform better in the future. During the final prize giving cerimony the local autorities have declared that in the future is their desire to widen and enhance the value of this event, until it becomes a reference point in the climbing and competition world.
