The competition
took place in Leipzig, in the ex-East Germany, where
some other prestigious events had already been organised. The artificial wall was inside a
Fair, and was 20 meters high and overhanging. About 130 competitors, coming from twenty
countries. The Italian team was still small, always for the Federation problems, and
composed by four athlets: Brenna, Lagni, Lella and Iovane. Unlucky the performance of
Brenna, in top form, who anyway led the ranking of the semifinal, together with Legrand
and Arnaud Petit. Unfortunately in the final the climber from Milan didn't find the right
rythmus and fell down to the eight place. Unexpected victory instead for Legrand, who was
recovering from a tendinitis and a torn ankle.
The Frenchman was the only competitor to find a no hand rest, that the route setters
hadn't found in the structure: a large stem between a stalactite and the wall. Behind him
the always more surprising Evgeni Krivocheicev and the actual champion Yuji Hirayama. In
the women's field
Sansoz won over Sarkany. In this occasion, to notice the Slowenian Martina Cufar, very
fit, between the two champions. 14° place for Luisa Iovane. Next appointment for the
World Cup in Besançon, France, mid June. |
